According to Patrick Berger, Borussia Dortmund are closing in on a loan deal to acquire 21-year-old left back Ian Maatsen from Chelsea FC. While no deal has been completed just yet, Berger expects one to be done relatively soon:
#BVB ist in den letzten Stunden im Poker um Ian Maatsen (21/ ) vorangekommen. Gespräche mit Chelsea weit fortgeschritten, aber noch kein Done Deal. Es ist aber sehr wahrscheinlich, dass der Linksverteidiger zeitnah per Leihe nach Dortmund kommt. ⌛️ #CFC @Plettigoal ⚫️— Patrick Berger (@berger_pj) January 6, 2024
With BVB starting their annual winter training in Marbella, Spain, transfer rumors are swirling about possible reinforcements that the club may bring in for the Rückrunde. With Julian Ryerson injured and Ramy Bensebaini set to miss games for the upcoming AFCON tournament, one of Sebastian Kehl’s top priorities is going to be left back, and Maatsen fits the bill.
As I wrote a few weeks ago, Ian Maatsen is an intriguing transfer target. He has barely played at Chelsea this season, but logged thousands of minutes over the last few seasons in the English Championship with Coventry City and Burnley. He even earned a spot in the English Championship’s team of the season last year. Maatsen could prove quite helpful to Edin Terzic’s BVB as they look to fight for a top four spot in the second half of the season. While his transfer fee may have been too much to bear financially for Dortmund, a loan deal could be the move necessary to fix Dortmund’s weakness at left back while not breaking the club’s budget.
Do you like this move for BVB? Let me know your thoughts.
