Borussia Dortmund returned to action after the winter break with a 3-0 win against a poor Darmstadt side, giving everyone some much needed joy after a pretty poor season. For the first hour or so of today’s game, Borussia Dortmund looked much like the team we all suffered watching in the first half of the season, but when Edin Terzic brought Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho on, BVB looked like a completely different team.
Goals from Julian Brandt, Marco Reus, and Youssoufa Moukoko got the job done today, but more than the scoreline, it was the injection of quality from Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho that was a breath of fresh air. Maybe, just maybe, BVB have a shot at chasing down RB Leipzig for third place?
Here are the MOTM nominations after Dortmund’s 3-0 win against Darmstadt.
Maatsen’s debut was very lively. He looks exactly like the player that BVB are in need of at full back. Not only was he moving the ball around well and getting up the pitch to provide width, he even made a few key defensive plays.
The substitutions opened the game up a lot, and Reus was involved in everything BVB did well when he came on. He linked up well with Sancho for Dortmund’s second, and was well worth a nomination despite only being on the pitch for a little more than half an hour.
At times Sancho looked like a player that hasn’t played in a while, but it was clear to see the quality he possesses. He was a threat every time he picked the ball up in and around the final third. He was able to find space so easily. It’s good to see him in a Dortmund kit again.
While the offensive game took a moment to get going, BVB looked pretty assured on the defensive end. Schlotterbeck was responsible for a lot of Dortmund’s best work in defense, and was his typical composed self in possession too.
