As reported by multiple sources including Sport Bild and the Dutch outlet 1908, Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Chelsea left back Ian Maatsen in the upcoming winter transfer window.

Maatsen is a 21-year-old, 5’6” left-back from the Netherlands who has struggled to break into Chelsea’s Starting XI behind other left backs Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella, with only 201 minutes across 12 appearances for Chelsea this season. This came after he played more than 3,000 minutes on loan with Burnley in the English Championship in 2022-23, with four goals and six assists in 39 total appearances.

I’d be lying if I said I’ve watched any of Maatsen’s football first hand, but playing over 3,000 minutes in the Championship as a 20-year-old is impressive, indicating he was an integral piece on a team that ended up winning the whole league and earning promotion to the premier league.

Maatsen would add desperately needed full back depth for BVB, would be an alternative to Ramy Bensebaini, who is going to miss several games playing for Algeria at AFCON, and would be another option that would allow Julian Ryerson to play at right back more often, when he returns from his injury.
