With a new manager, plenty of injuries, and kids playing in key positions, you can fully expect Borussia Dortmund to be a little messy at times... But they were really pushing their luck this afternoon.
BVB were brilliant for stretches, and then a total disaster for other stretches. Bayer Leverkusen played well at times too, and all credit to them, but it was the fact that there was just so many dumb plays by multiple players.
Anyway, with that in mind, here’s the four nominations I could come up with from that nonsense.
Marin Pongracic
Pongo was really active on his debut for Borussia Dortmund. He was putting himself about plenty, and if it wasn’t for his presence in defense, BVB easily could have gone down three or four goals in the first half.
He showed plenty of physicality, was solid in possession, and I liked his positioning throughout. A really nice start for the Croatian defender.
Gregor Kobel
He made a few nice saves to keep Dortmund in the game, and I don’t think he was really to blame for any of the goals he conceded.
Thomas Meunier
Meunier had a weird game. He did quite a lot wrong, but he also did quite a lot right too. He had an assist from a lovely cross, which Erling Haaland headed home, and he also picked up the second assist for the Brandt goal. If it wasn’t for the weird call on Bellingham’s goal, he would have had two second assists.
Thomas Meunier is a weird player that I do not understand, and that probably doesn’t deserve a nomination here, but he did more to make up for the bad than most players.
Erling Haaland
I dunno. He scored twice? What did everyone else do?
