The 2021-22 Borussia Dortmund season officially began today, and it couldn’t have started any better. BVB managed a clean sheet and a hat trick for Erling Haaland, who looks ready to light the Bundesliga on fire.
The squad looked absolutely ready to rumble. Wehen Wiesbaden came out predictably intense, and BVB were able to match it stride for stride. Gio Reyna, Marco Reus, and Erling Haaland each looked like they were in midseason form, and Gregor Kobel looked very comfortable playing out of the back.
Here are my managers for MOTM:
Erling Haaland
He scored a hat trick and easily could’ve had more. He was an absolute monster, pouncing on through balls from Gio Reyna and Marco Reus constantly. He terrorized Wiesbaden’s back line.
Gio Reyna
Hey, speak of the devil! Gio Reyna took over the #7 shirt in Jadon Sancho’s absence, and at least today, he looked more than ready to fill the creative hole left by the Englishman. Every time he collected the ball with any space in front of him he was a menace, moving forward and beating defenders. He easily could’ve had an assist or goal.
Marco Reus
The captain looked fantastic as one of the spokes in Marco Rose’s 4-4-2 diamond. His through ball in to Haaland for his first goal was absolutely gorgeous.
Gregor Kobel
While he didn’t necessarily make any key saves, he was fantastic dealing with pressure from Wiesbaden. Antonios Papadopoulos looked very shaky under pressure and he played a few risky passes back to Kobel, but the Swiss keeper always dealt with them with ease. Hopefully Kobel’s abilities on the ball add some versatility to the squad’s tactics throughout the season
