MOTM Poll: Silly Mistakes at the Back Lose Dortmund the Super Cup

That sucked. Thank god it was only the Super Cup!

Borussia Dortmund lost the Super Cup to Bayern Munich in frustrating fashion as major mistakes at the back ended up costing the black and yellows dearly. This loss marks the club’s 6th in a row to the Bavarians. Defensive giveaways were ultimately to blame for the result, with Felix Passlack and Manuel Akanji making the two most damning mistakes. Two goals from Robert Lewandowski and a tap-in from Thomas Muller ended up making the difference despite Dortmund, at times, looking like the better side in attack. Not winning the Super Cup is unfortunate, but BVB will have to pick themselves up quickly and focus on the far more important Bundesliga matches ahead.

Here are today’s top performers:

Marco Reus

Reus’ goal today was the obvious highlight of the match from a Dortmund perspective. That screamer alone should get him onto this list, but he also made dangerous runs throughout the match and engaged in some nice link-up play.

Mahmoud Dahoud

Dahoud continued his brilliant play in the number six role today, as he pressed well and stole the ball high up the pitch on multiple occasions. He was also inches from a world-class assist to Erling Haaland. If not for the offside flag, that pass would have been talked about for quite some time.

Jude Bellingham

It’s often easy to forget just how young Bellingham is when you watch him play football. Today against Bayern Munich, he was a wrecking ball in the center of midfield. Combine that with a few really nice dribbling sequences, and I think he earned a nomination for MOTM.

Gio Reyna

A few players could’ve taken the fourth spot on this list, but Reyna was ultimately the one I chose due to his positive influence in the attack. The American looked good with the ball at his feet and was unafraid to go strong into a tackle. He seems to be approaching this season with a far more tenacious attitude than his last, and it shows.
