Edin Terzic, the caretaker manager responsible for saving Borussia Dortmund’s season, will not be moving on to a coaching role at another club. Despite rumors that other Bundesliga clubs like Wolfsburg were interested in his services as head coach, Terzic has chosen to stay in Dortmund. According to a press release on BVB’s official website, Terzic has extended his contract until 2025.

With Marco Rose arriving to take over as head coach, it would seem natural that Edin Terzic would take a role as his assistant on the touchline. However, somewhat surprisingly, this is not the case. Terzic has accepted a position as the club’s “technical director”, a new management that will take him away from the pitch and into the front office. The position is a new one, created by Michael Zorc, Sebastian Kehl, and Hans-Joachim Watzke following an analysis of last season.

It’s difficult to say what exactly will be Terzic’s responsibilities. According to an interview he held with the club, he will be involved with “squad planning” and will act as another point of contact for players in the youth academy to make sure they’re comfortable at the club. He will also act as an advisor to Kehl and Zorc on anything sporting related on which he can provide his expertise.

Given Terzic’s success with BVB, his lifelong fandom for the club, and his popularity with the players and the fan base, it’s clear that his presence at the club is a net positive. The club extending his contract will allow him to continue to serve the club for years to come, and maybe one day rise into an even larger role.
