Borussia Dortmund have shown consistent interest in Donyell Malen in the lead up to this summer’s transfer window, and today, BVB Newsblog have reported (via SportBILD) that the club is in discussions with the player and his agent. It is widely reported that his current club, PSV Eindhoven, are looking for a fee of around €30 million to sanction his sale. This is a bargain for a player who produced 23 goals and 8 assists in 40 matches between the Eredivisie and Europa League this past season (fbref).

Die Schwarzgelben will need to move quickly if they have any serious interest in this deal, as the player has caught the attention of other European powerhouses. Holland have qualified for the knockout stages of Euro 2020 in style, and Malen has seen minutes in each of their qualifying games. Liverpool are said to be sniffing around for a deal for the Dutch international, whose versatility across the attacking line could see him serve as a long-term replacement for either Robert Firmino in the center or one of their two aging wingers.

With Manchester United making a deal for Sancho difficult on themselves (surprise, surprise), Dortmund may be forced into a difficult position. Dortmund cannot commit to a deal for Malen until they know that Jadon Sancho will not be rejoining the squad in the fall. Some sources (of medium reliability) have reported that Dortmund have set a deadline for the deal like they did last summer, to ensure there is enough time to adequately replace the Englishman. It is likely that Dortmund will want any proceedings wrapped up before their full preseason training camp begins on July 23rd.

Either way, Dortmund will need to move quickly to secure this deal and, given the price tag, probably should not hesitate.
