With a spot in the Champions League already secured, today’s match meant very little to the league table for Borussia Dortmund, but there were a whole lot of emotions on display at the Westfalenstadion as Borussia Dortmund said goodbye to the GOAT Lukasz Piszczek. A victory ensured third place for the season and BVB came out and put in an impressive performance, winning 3-1, despite Edin Terzic making several changes to the starting XI.

A brace from Erling Haaland sandwiched a bizarre free kick scored by Marco Reus, but all that played second fiddle to the raw emotions of the final matches for Piszczek, Sven and Lars Bender, and the DFB’s best referee Manuel Gräfe. Here are today’s candidates for Man of the Match:

Lukasz Piszczek

Was instrumental in leading the team for the afternoon as captain for the day as he took the armband once again and embraced leadership like a modern day Churchill.

As colleague Zac Weilminster said, “played out of his skin” at right back this afternoon keeping Demarai Gray in his pocket while simultaneously commanding the back four, brilliant!

Was bombing down the right side as much as possible to provide the overlap and width in the attack. While he isn’t a spring chicken anymore, Piszczek showed what a great motor he has all day, and defended well on the right side as well.

Much like Mahmoud Dahoud, his hair game was on point as usual which is amazing considering the magnitude of the game. One could forgive him for letting it slip with everything going on in the buildup, but let’s face it, we knew he would bring it didn’t we?
