Forget the Europa League, everyone! There will be no boring Thursday night snoozers against Legia Warsaw, no Tuesdays or Wednesdays spent watching other clubs find success, no missed TV revenue. With their win today against Mainz 05, Borussia Dortmund jumped four points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt, clinching qualification for the Champions League next season.

It looked like an improbability for such a long time... there were even points when it looked impossible. A devastating loss to Eintracht Frankfurt left BVB down seven points with only seven games remaining. Instead of folding, Dortmund hit the pedal to the metal when it mattered and rattled off six wins in a row, including several against heavy-hitting opponents RB Leipzig, Wolfsburg, and Union Berlin. BVB now won’t even need to beat Leverkusen on the final day of the season to clinch a spot in the top four.

I’m so excited. The Champions League is the pinnacle of competition football, and it’s so much fun to cover on a weekly basis. It also has massive benefits for the club financially, providing a vital source of revenue to a club that has been hit badly by the COVID pandemic. Finally, it may just be enough to convince Erling Haaland and/or Jadon Sancho to stick around for another season, as well as any other potential transfer targets like Maxence Lacroix to hop on board.

So enjoy the final match day and the EUROs this summer, and rest easy knowing that more great European nights away Borussia Dortmund. Heja BVB!
