Man of the Match Poll: Dortmund Trounce Holstein Kiel, But Mateu Morey Suffers a Devastating Injury

it was so close to being a perfect night.

Borussia Dortmund had a rather easy time today dispatching an exhausted Holstein Kiel side. The second division side were playing their third match in seven days due to a Covid outbreak in the squad, and their tired legs showed, as Dortmund’s five first-half goals led to an easy 5-0 victory.

Though this match was little more than a walk in the park for Dortmund, a scary 74th minute injury to Mateu Morey looms over the otherwise excellent performance. The Spaniard fell in an awkward fashion sending him to the ground in pain. Though there has been no official announcement from the club pertaining to the extent of the injury, at first glance, it seems unlikely that Morey will be returning to the pitch anytime soon.

Here are today’s Man of the Match nominees:

Marco Reus

Against a tired Kiel side, Marco Reus was nearly perfect. His passing and first touch was world-class, and his goal was exceptionally well taken. Holstein Kiel obviously weren’t on Dortmund’s level today, but this match was an excellent reminder of what an in-form Reus can do.

Jadon Sancho

Sancho was a bit more than Holstein Kiel could handle tonight. Fin Bartels, in particular, will need some time to recover after Sancho broke his ankles with the slightest of shimmies early on in the contest. He didn’t score today, but his two assists and otherwise dominant performance more than earn him a spot on this list.

Gio Reyna

Seeing Gio Reyna score Dortmund’s first two goals today gave me flashbacks to the preseason, when he was bagging opening goals for fun. Reyna seems to have regained his prominent role in the squad, and he’s been crushing over the last few weeks. Hopefully, he can maintain this level of performance for the remaining four matches of the season.

Mateu Morey

This is a sentimental pick, I know, but Morey has been through quite a lot in his Dortmund career, and watching him suffer another setback in such horrific fashion should have even the most cold-hearted fans feeling sympathy. Get well soon, Mateu.
