We might be desensitized to the whole concept of “most important match of the season” but, this one truly was a legit contender! If Borussia Dortmund tied or lost to Wolfsburg, that would have surely squashed the dream of Champions League qualification.
For a team that seems to never (or hardly ever) capitalize on opportunities to make significant strides forward, today was the day! This begs the question: Who contributed the most to this essential win?
See below for today’s Man of the Match nominations:
Łukasz Piszczek
Not much needs to be said here. I mean, his name alone (and the fact that he started...again!) warrants a nomination. He could have caused 10 OGs and I would still nominate him. The fact that he turned in a stellar performance today is immaterial. He is our beloved Piszcu. Our GOAT. And he has very few opportunities left to be nominated.
Marco Reus
I, do hereby dub thee, Sir Fancy Footwork. Watching Reus on the ball today was delightful. For a player so plagued by injury, it is always an honor to witness what he can do. His early pass to Sancho outside the box and his nutmeg on, former comrade, Maximilian Philipp in addition to putting himself in position to help create chances is enough for a nomination. No wonder @raecomm described him as “dancing with the ball at his feet.”
Erling Haaland
Some of you may know I’m not on the Haaland’s bandwagon. It’s just always easy to give MOTM to the goal scorer! Today, though, he made me eat crow. Putting BVB ahead early by being in the right place at the right time allowed him to capitalize on that wayward Wolfsburg pass. And again! In the second half he was where he needed to be to receive that unbelievably epic pass from Mo Dahoud to score the second goal that pretty much secured the win for Dortmund. Bully job today, Erling!
Mo Dahoud
Our boy delivered today. A cult favorite who has experienced a renaissance of sorts under Edin Terzić. Some argue that his “assist” to Haaland’s second goal was not really an assist and should be credited as a Dahoud goal. What. A. Beauty. It was, simply, the assist to end all assists.
