For just a moment yesterday, the result of Der Klassiker and football as a whole became a triviality. In the 69th minute, Julian Brandt and Dayot Upamecano challenged for an open ball. Unfortunately, both players missed the ball and smashed their heads together. Both players went down, but Julian Brandt was out cold. The urgency of the situation became immediately apparent when Bayern defender Lucas Hernandez hurriedly shouted to the touchline for the medical staff to come onto the pitch.

Brandt lay motionless on the pitch for a few moments before regaining consciousness, much to the relief of everybody in the Westfalenstadion. Despite coming to, he still needed to be stretchered off the pitch. Thankfully, according to Sebastian Kehl, Brandt is stable, and is feeling better after spending a night in the hospital, although he did suffer a concussion.

A concussion can be a serious injury, but it’s definitely not the worst possible outcome. Hopefully Brandt can make a full recovery within the next few weeks, and return to the pitch quickly, because his play recently has been some of his best in his time with Borussia Dortmund.
