Good morning! Or, in honor of yesterday’s winners, Guten Morgen.

Germany Qualifies for the World Cup

Congratulations to the German National Team for officially qualifying for the 2022 World Cup! The Germans booked their ticket to Qatar yesterday with a 4-1 win against Armenia, bolstered by goals from Kai Havertz, Jonas Hoffmann, and Ilkay Gundogan, who scored twice.

Manager Hansi Flick has done a remarkable job with Die Mannschaft. At the moment he took over for Joachim Low, the general lack of quality on the pitch was glaring. They also suffered a series of unimpressive results in the Nations League and in the Euros. Under Flick, though, the Germans have cruised through an admittedly easy qualifying group, and can now look forward to the World Cup next year.

Another surprising result was Serbia’s shocking stoppage time victory over Portugal, which pushed Serbia to the top of the group and knocked Portugal into a playoff. Cristiano Ronaldo now has a very realistic chance of missing what could otherwise be his final World Cup.

What to Look For Today

There are a few more big qualifiers today. England can automatically qualify for the World Cup with a point from their match against the mightiest of opponents, San Marino. A perhaps more uncertain result will be what happens in Group C. Italy and Switzerland are both tied on points at the top of the group, and play Northern Ireland and Bulgaria respectively tomorrow.

As you can see, Italy have a slim, +2 advantage on Switzerland. Keep in mind that the two matches they played against each other both ended in draws, so the head-to-head doesn’t matter.
