In a midweek DFB Pokal match against a second division side, about the most you can hope for is a comfortable, stress-free win. Luckily, despite being riddled by injuries, Borussia Dortmund were able to brush aside FC Ingolstadt for an easy 2-0 win. Although they dominated pretty much from start to finish, it wasn’t until the second half that BVB would finally break through, courtesy of a pair of goals from Thorgan Hazard.
Here are my candidates for Man of the Match:
Thorgan Hazard
Score the only two goals of the match, you get nominated for MOTM. Those are the rules! BVB lacked the critical finishing touch in the first half, with Tigges blowing his only chances and Jude Bellingham suffering from some poor ball luck. Hazard came on and provided the critical finishing to make the difference for BVB.
Jude Bellingham
Jude didn’t score, but he still may have been the best player to play the full 90 minutes. He was everywhere, doing typical Bellingham-y things: winning balls, embarrassing defenders, pumping up the crowd, and being really unfortunate not to score.
Julian Brandt
While I was critical of Brandt’s performance over the weekend, and especially against Ajax, he redeemed himself somewhat today with a pair of assists on Thorgan Hazard’s goals. He looked dangerous on the ball and his crosses were both perfect.
Mats Hummels
Ingolstadt hardly ever looked like an actual goalscoring threat, but whenever they did cautiously venture into the attacking third, Hummels was there to snuff them out. He also had a goal called off in the first half that I thought was a little unfair.
