Ajax have had a hell of a start to their season, and they continued that form in the Champions League tonight, shellacking Borussia Dortmund 4-0 at the Johan Cruijff Arena.
Before BVB could get settled, they found themselves 1-0 down from a Tadic set piece, which was unfortunately converted by Marco Reus, and Ajax followed that up with a second from a lovely Daley Blind finish from just outside the penalty area. BVB were comprehensively beaten in the first half, but things didn’t get a whole lot better in the second half either.
Dortmund did start the second half a little brighter, but it wasn’t long before Antony scored Ajax’s third, and the game was done and dusted by that point. But just for good measure, Sebastien Haller popped up to score Ajax’s fourth.
It was a terrible performance by Borussia Dortmund, so with that in mind, here’s my effort to scrape the barrel for some man of the match nominations:
Mats Hummels
Made several crucial tackles to keep things from being even more embarrassing
Gregor Kobel
Made several crucial saves to keep things from being even more embarrassing
Jude Bellingham
Right I’m already having to give out participation trophies here, because most of the players did not participate at all. Bellingham was at least putting himself about and trying to make things happen.
Thomas Meunier
I mean, he didn’t do anything wrong, I guess?
