Good morning, Fear The Wall!

Breel Embolo in Party Controversy

Breel Embolo has been in the news lately, but not for his exploits on the pitch. According to reports from multiple outlets, Borussia Monchengladbach star and Swiss national team player allegedly ran from the police after he was caught at a party in Essen (big no-no right now) with upwards of 23 people at the party with little to no masks in sight (a no-no double whammy). The German/Swiss (?) news outlet de24news has a complete timeline of the events, plus statements from Monchengladbach goalie Yann Sommers and manager Marco Rose.

Embolo insists that he was not at the party, and that he was at a nearby apartment to watch a basketball game, which is still a very stupid thing to do in times such as these. Whether or not Embolo was at the party or at a friend’s place close to the party is irrelevant; he shouldn’t have been anywhere near this kind of situation.

Rose has already stated that Embolo will be in the line-up for Gladbach’s match against Borussia Dortmund, but whether he receives punishment from the club or police is up in the air. I feel like this isn’t the last we have heard of this story.

Zinedine Zidane Tests Positive for COVID-19

In an official statement from the club, Real Madrid have confirmed a positive COVID-19 test of their manager, Zinedine Zidane.

To say it’s been a rough go of things for Zidane at Madrid this season would be an understatement. While Real currently sit second in LaLiga and just ahead of Barcelona, they’re still seven points behind rival Atletico Madrid. They just lost the Spanish Super Cup to Athletic Bilbao, and they were knocked out of the Copa Del Ray to CD Alcoyano, a third division side, and they just barely qualified for the Champions League knockout stages.

I don’t really follow Spanish soccer, so I can’t say what exactly is going on at Real, but if you’re a club of that size, there’s no way you should be losing to a team in the third division or struggling to qualify for the next stage of Champions League from a very easy group.
