DFB Pokal Recap

The first round of the DFB Cup is underway, and while Borussia Dortmund will face MSV Duisburg the later today, most clubs have already wrapped up their first round matches. The DFB Cup is a competition where anything can happen, and the results from yesterday demonstrate this. While there weren’t any downright crazy upsets, some Bundesliga cubs had some close calls against clubs from the lower tiers.

The only underdog club that successfully pulled off an upset against a Bundesliga Club was Eintracht Braunschweig, who beat Hertha Berlin in a wacky back-and-forth 5-4 victory, backed by a hat trick from their striker Martin Kobylanski.

TSG Hoffenheim defeated Chemnitzer FC, but only by the skin of their teeth. The match went into extra time after the first 90 ended 1-1, and Hoffenheim even went down 2-1 after Christian Bickel scored in the 100th minute. Unfortunately for Chemnitzer, Andrej Kramaric equalized 11 minutes later, and Hoffenheim would go on to win on penalties.

Some of the matches were less close, and more like what we’d expect from a first round match between an elite club and a lower-tier club. Leverkusen steamrolled Eintracht Norderstedt 7-0. Augsburg beat Eintracht Celle by the same scoreline. Borussia Mönchengladbach beat Oberneuland by an even larger scoreline of 8-0. Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Wolfsburg advanced easily as well.
