Good morning, Fear the Wall.

Bellingham Receives Racist Abuse

Last night, Jude Bellingham posted to his Twitter account a racist comment directed at him. A user had responded to a post from Birmingham City FC claiming that Bellingham only cared about money, and then claimed that black players in general only care about money. According to an article from Sky Sports, the West Midlands Police are investigating.

This is just the latest example of a seemingly escalating trend of players receiving abuse online and then exposing their abusers to the entire internet. A few weeks ago, Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha received similarly disgusting abuse on Instagram, and posted the offending account’s information for the entire world to see. Within hours, police in the UK had arrested a 12-year-old boy.

Social media is a great tool for boosting interactions between the players and the fans, but there are obvious downsides as well. Many people feel that their actions online have no consequences, and they therefore feel that they can hurl racist insults with impunity. So many soccer players have been participating in the Black Lives Matter protests, and with incidents like this, it’s easy to see why.
