Good morning, Fear The Wall!
Spongebob Squarepants Tease
At 5:10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (best time zone there is, but I digress), the Borussia Dortmund English account posted this video:
If you couldn’t tell from the video, that’s the font used for the show Spongebob Squarepants. They also changed the BVB logo slightly to have the same spongy texture as Spongebob, and they used the same kind of bubble transition used in the show.
What does it all mean? Does this mean we’re getting a Spongebob-themed special kit? Can the goalie jersey be like Patrick? Could it mean the return of Michy Batshuayi, who is a massive Spongebob fan? Is Sweet Victory going to be the new goal song?
No one knows, although most believe that we are getting a special Spongebob-themed kit, a la the all-black kit that everyone absolutely loved and was unveiled around this time last year.
*chef kiss* Beautiful.
That kit was created to honor the rich coal-mining history of Dortmund and the Ruhr region as a whole, and the kit was so popular that it was completely sold out in three hours.
This certainly wouldn’t be the first Spongebob-themed jersey to be released, as a number of minor league baseball teams have donned uniforms celebrating the hit tv show that debuted in 1999 (holy crap I feel old af), but this may be the first football club to do anything related to the show.
It’s quite possible that there won’t even be a special kit. It could be a new sponsorship with ViacomCBS, who owns Spongebob Squarepants, along with Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures and a list of other media properties. Hell, it could even be a loose partnership like when Snoopy/Peanuts and Dortmund partnered up for some special merch back in 2017.
I guess we’re going to have to wait until December 4 to find out what it all means.
