BVB defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-0 today to go top of the table(for now). After a long int break and a terrible game preceding that break we were all anxious to see how BVB did against a good opponent. Turns out we had nothing to worry about. The BVB goal scorers were Paco, Reus(2) and Raphael Guerreiro.
The first half was wild. Both teams had good chances on goal. Leverkusen pressed BVB very hard all half and this led to some close moments for the black and yellows. Likewise BVB were given plenty of opportunities to break and get themselves their own close chances. After a scramble in the box where there may have been a handball and Hradecky made two immaculate saves it felt like this would be another game where everything went against BVB. The stalemate was broken when Hakimi picked Paco out from the edge of the final third for a wonderful goal. The goal was a show of great vision from Hakimi and great finesse from Paco. Alcacer has scored in every game domestic and international game this season. It’s safe to say that won’t keep up but hes been amazing so far. After the goal BVB sat back and defended a little better the rest of the half. After a few nervy set pieces the half ended 1-0.
The second half started just as intense as the first. Both Bayern and BVB took some good chances. It didn’t take BVB long to score however as Sancho, Paco and Reus combined for a wonderful goal. Sancho threaded a wonderful pass to Paco who dummy’d the ball to Reus for the tap in. A wonderful BVB style goal. After the goal BVB were more then content to sit back and allow Bayer to play their own game. This really didn’t feel like the best strategy as any counter we attempted was really just a off place long ball or a player running into to much traffic. A counter is what got us our third goal. A wonderful goal as Raph started the break at the halfway line and after passing to Delaney and Delaney to Sancho, Raph finished a cross from Sancho. Great hustle from Raph who decided to stay with BVB this year. We are all very happy he did. After the goal there was only 6 or so minutes left in the game, all of which Bayer squandered.
Some great takeaways from this game. BVB came back from their embarrassing loss to Union with a dominant performance over a top 4 club in the league. Everyone played great at BVB today. Witsel was incredible at stopping Bayer breaks and dealing with the Bayer press. Sancho and Reus were both incredible chance creators as always. Hakimi proves yet again why he has so much potential. Delaney had one of the best games he’s ever played in black and yellow. If he can keep playing like that our midfield rotation will always be stacked through the busy times of the season. Both Akanji and Hummels looked like their old selves, a good sign of things to come hopefully. Also Rah Guerreiro proves he chose right when he decided to not transfer this summer. He does great in black and yellow.
What are your thoughts on the game today?
