  • DFB Cup recap

The first round of the DFB Cup isn’t completed just yet, there are still 4 games to be played most notably Energie Cottbus vs Bayern Munich, but there have been some interesting results.

Two Bundesliga teams are already eliminated, Mainz lost to third division side 1.FC Kaiserslautern (0:2) and Augsburg lost to Regionalliga West (4th division) team SC Verl (1:2). Two other big teams HSV and Köln narrowly avoided being eliminated in the first round, both teams won their games in a penalty shootout.

Mats Hummels has returned to Dortmund and the black and yellows hope he can stabilize the defense and bring the needed mentality to the team to win the Bundesliga title. The center back has now talked for the first time since his return to kicker and has mentioned the mentality needed to win titles:

“It has to be said that the winning mentality in Munich is not the worst, as can be seen for more than 40 years, and it must be the goal to bring that attitude to life in Dortmund as well.”

Even though Hummels has won quite a few titles in his three years in Munich it seems that winning with Dortmund has left a bigger impression on him:

“In Dortmund, titles are worth more than anywhere else - I really enjoy this special atmosphere around the club, including in the stadium. When things go well, people here are particularly euphoric and enthusiastic.”

Germany coach Joachim Löw has basically decided to throw Hummels out of the German national team at the start of the year but Hummels has not given up just yet:

“If I’m allowed to put on the jersey for Germany again at some point, I would not fight back. [...] I do not think about it and will use the international break for other purposes. But I’ll play for a few more years, let’s just see what happens.“

  • New contract for Inaki Williams

Athletic Bilbao has been linked to Borussia Dortmund in the past and has now extended his contract with the club. That in itself is not that noteworthy but Williams signed a 9-year extension (!) with the Spanish club until 2028. That is unheard of for a professional contract.

  • BVB defeat Preußen Münster in friendly

Borussia Dortmund has played their last friendly of the pre-season against SC Preußen Münster on Saturday. BVB won 4:0 thanks to goals from Balerdi, Zagadou and a brace from Götze.
