The season is still far away but we have our first scheduled opponent for the DFB Cup. Borussia Dortmund have drawn KFC Uerdingen for the first round of the Pokal. No date has been announced for the game as of yet.
KFC play in the 3.Liga where they have been for a year. The recently were in the 5th tier of German football but managed to promote twice in two seasons to get back up. While you probably haven’t heard of them, KFC were a bigger team in the 80’s, having played in the Bundesliga for most of the decade and winning the 1985 DFB Cup. They even made it to the semi-finals of the illustrious Cup Winners Cup the year after their DFB victory. Since then times haven't been great for the club. They suffered financial difficulties in the 2000’s and have been bouncing between the 3rd and 5th tiers since. One nice thing about drawing KFC from a BVB fan perspective is that Kevin Großkreutz plays for them. It will be great to see him back interacting with old teammates like Marco Reus and Mario Gotze.
