Dortmund won 4-0 away at Freiburg today in a statement performance. This win puts BVB yet again 1 point behind Bayern on the Bundesliga table. The goals were from Sancho, Reus, Gotze and Paco.
The first half started pretty good for BVB. At the 12’ mark Marco Reus served up the ball right in front of goal for Jadon Sancho to finish. it was great work from Marco to get the pass off and great work from Sancho to make the run. I swear these two are telepathic with each other sometimes. The rest of the half was in Freiburg’s control. There were some nervy moments at the back, notably a bad pass from Burki that almost led to a goal. Freiburg were unlucky to score as they had made some good chances. Burki and Dortmunds backline managed to end the half at 1-0.
The second half began as the first half ended. Freiburg had some good chances and possession, but Marco Reus did not care to let his game linger. At the 54’ mark Reus slotted it easily to put us up 2-0. After that goal the game calmed down quite a bit. Freiburg had more chances, most of them quite good, but just couldn’t finish. Mario Gotze killed the game off at the 79’ mark with the third goal of the game. Reus made the same dribble and pass he made to assist the first goal, serving the ball up to Gotze this time. Just to add on, Paco scored a pen due at the 87th minute. The game ended 4-0 and with the ref mercy calling it with no bonus time.
Overall great game from BVB. We know this team can score goals but today they proved to us and themselves they could hold onto leads despite making mistakes and absorbing pressure. Witsel was everywhere today. He consistently was playing very forward while also breaking up Freiburg possession and breaks in our third. Reus was clearly MOTM with two assists and a goal. Marco really has just been wild this year. It wouldn't be controversial to declare him our player of the season. Wolf went down in the second half hurt. He was taken off a few minutes later. Hopefully he isn’t to hurt as Dortmund really can’t afford to to have more injuries.
Next week is the derby! This was definitely a good warm-up!
