Jeremy Toljan is currently on loan in Scotland with Celtic Glasgow and is finally getting some much needed playing time. The fullback has opened up in an interview with Spox and Goal about his difficult situation in Dortmund, his current club Celtic and what the future holds for him.
The fullback talked about his difficult situation in Dortmund this season:
“Of course I am disappointed that I never got a chance. However, the team played very strong and was extremely successful, so it was generally not a situation for frequent changes. The full-backs played well too. It was also clear to me that Achraf Hakimi would first get his chance in front of me - which he then used. There was no reason for the coach to take him out of the team. I had no choice but to train well and continue to wait for my chance. This is professional football.”
Despite being loaned out and not having a clear path back into the team, Toljan is not giving up on breaking into BVB’s team:
“I still have a three-year contract in Dortmund this summer. Therefore I assume to play for BVB again. I will then compete and try to get back into the team.”
Toljan seems to have the right mindset, he’s being realistic about his current situation but he’s also looking forward to getting another chance in Dortmund. Given BVB’s current depth at fullback Toljan could get another chance.
Mario Götze has developed nicely over the course of the season and you could even make the argument that he’s been BVB’s best player this season. His versatility has been key for Lucien Favre and Michael Zorc has commented on his development:
“We have all discovered that Mario has developed well over the course of the season and has become stronger and stronger.”
Now the only question remains if or when will Götze extend? Zorc did not want to comment on the negotiations but it’s expected that the 26-year-old will stay in Dortmund a few more years.
Daily Buzz: What will happen with Götze, BVB want to extend his contract and it seems like he wants to stay in Dortmund as well but where will he actually play in the future? His versatility has been great for Dortmund but if the rumored plans of buying another striker, winger and central midfielder are true where would that leave Götze? What do you think is his best position and where should Favre play him?
