- DFB Cup results
Dortmund shockingly lost on penalties to Werder Bremen to get knocked out of the DFB Cup. The entire focus will now be on the title race and the Champions League.
The biggest surprise, apart from BVB’s defeat, was obviously Bayer Leverkusen losing to 2.Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim just days after beating Bayern Munich. Leverkusen got the lead just before halftime but Heidenheim was able to turn it around and qualify for the quarterfinals.
Hamburg was the second lower tier side to win against a Bundesliga team, although that result was not that surprising. HSV, who are currently 1st in the 2.Bundesliga beat Nürnberg, who are 17th in the Bundesliga, with 1:0. SC Paderborn also got to the next round with a 3:1 away win in Duisburg.
Marco Reus scored the equalizer just before halftime in yesterdays loss to Bremen but he had to get subbed immediately after the goal. BVB’s captain had problems with his thigh but wanted to play on, however Favre decided to get him of the pitch. After the game Michael Zorc admitted that the risk of a muscle injury was too big to risk it. Reus himself could not yet tell if he would be available for the Bundesliga game against Hoffenheim on Saturday.
Lucien Favre’s current contract runs until the summer of 2020, nevertheless Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that BVB would like to extend his contract. Talking to Sport Bild Watzke said:
“It is logical that we will talk to him soon about a contract extension because he is simply doing good work. The cooperation is excellent, so we want to continue it “
Despite yesterday’s loss to Bremen in the DFB Cup, Dortmund are still in the midst of a great season that could lead to a Bundesliga title.
