Its official, Julian Weigl’s has been sold to Benfica for whats reported to be €20 million euros. In BVBs official statement Zorc confirms that Weigl requested the transfer and the club obliged.

Weigl had been with the club since 2015 when he joined from 1860 Munich. In his first two years with the club he looked like one of the best young midfielders in the world under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel. He still has the Bundesliga record for completed passes in a game and his total pass completion rate under Tuchel was over 90% both seasons. Since Tuchel left the club Weigl has not looked the same player. Under Bosz and Stoger he was a liability when on the ball, regularly pressed into making a bad pass or being tackled. Under Favre he continued his run of poor form, only ever making a difference when he was slotted in as a centerback when injuries required so. While he has been useful this season as a two position player, its understandable the club would let him go. Julian is not at the level required at BVB.

A few years ago the papers were saying Weigl would transfer to Barcelona or Real Madrid for a €100 million sum, not he heads to Portugal for €20 million. We will always have the great memories of him lifting the 2017 Pokal trophy. Good luck Julian!
