- Matchday 18 recap
Borussia Dortmund have defied their injury problems, Reus out and only one healthy centerback, and have won their game against RB Leipzig. It was a close game but an Axel Witsel goal secured the three points and gave BVB their 6-pont lead back after Bayern cut it to three on Friday with a 3-1 away win in Hoffenheim.
Peter Bosz’s return to the Bundesliga did not go as planned. The former BVB-coach lost his first game in charge of Bayer Leverkusen against Gladbach who stay in third place.
Eintracht Frankfurt continue to put on great performances, especially their front three, Jovic, Haller and Rebic who all scored in their 3-1 victory over Freiburg.
Meanwhile the teams that battle relegation almost all lost. Neither Nürnberg, Hannover, Stuutgart or Augsburg could get anything on the first matchday of 2019. Fortuna Düsseldorf however continued their good run and won against rivals Augsburg to pick up three crucial points.

André Breitenreiter could be sacked in Hannover before next weeks game in Dortmund. BVB’s next opponent is currently in 17th place and has lost 4 consecutive home games. According to kicker either U23 coach Christoph Dabrowski or U19 coach Stephan Schmidt will be the interim coach against Dortmund. Candidates to replace Breitenreiter are Mirko Slomka and Markus Gisdol.
- Reus injury update
Marco Reus rolled his ankle during Friday’s training and could not participate in Saturday’s win against Leipzig but the captain won’t be out for long. Michael Zorc confirmed in an interview with Sportstudio that they hope Reus can already be back for next week’s game against Hannover but at worst he would be 2 weeks out.
Daily Buzz: Axel Witsel’s goal against was not only important but also a rather pretty shot. Which leads to the question what was BVB’s best goal this season?
