Christian Pulisic and number of young, up-and-coming American soccer players were the feature of a seven-video series titled “RISING: Emerging Faces of the U.S. Men’s National Team” on YouTube by US Soccer.
I’m sure you all know the story by now of Pulisic’s rise to American soccer stardom from a number of other video features of him, but it’s still nice to see and hear about his exploits in youth soccer, the Nike Friendlies that helped him catch the eye of Borussia Dortmund and other European clubs. It was also cool to see Academy Director Lars Ricken talk about seeing the potential Pulisic had and how former manager Jürgen Klopp say how after three training sessions he was first-team material.
Ricken goes on to say that he has the talent to succeed, but it’s his “mentality… that allows him to be so focused, disciplined, confident, self-reliant, team-oriented player,” and it’s evident every time we see him step out onto the field. As a fan of both Borussia Dortmund and the US Men’s National Team, I’m beyond excited to see him continue to develop and lead both teams in the future, as this marks the start of a rebuild for both Dortmund and the US. With a lot of older players leaving and being phased out by both organizations, young players like Pulisic should aim to be at the forefront of the youth movements.
In addition to the Pulisic feature, there are videos of fellow Americans like Weston McKennie (Schalke), Josh Sargent (Werder Bremen), Timothy Weah (PSG… yes, son of George Weah), and others. You can check out the whole series of videos here.
Pulisic and Dortmund are in America for their preseason as part of the International Champions Cup. They’ll be in Chicago on July 20th against Manchester City, then in Charlotte against Liverpool on the 22nd, before wrapping it all up in Pittsburg against Benfica on the 25th.
