Only 22-years-old, Diallo played in 30 total games for Mainz last season, logging 2,686 minutes across the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal while recording three goals and an assist. He’s a dynamic defender that can play either centrally or at leftback.
Prior to moving to Mainz for one season, Diallo spent his youth career all across France before setting in with AS Monaco. He made a total of 18 appearances for Monaco, with his debut coming in 2014. He also spent one season on loan at Zulte Waregem of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League in 2015-16, making 35 combined league, Belgian playoff, and Belgian Cup appearances.
To see new manager Lucien Favre so involved in his transfer is a very positive sign, and hopefully he can make an immediate impact at one of two areas of desperate need for Borussia Dortmund. It proves that a) he knows what he wants from his defense, and b) he strongly believes Diallo is the guy to make his vision a reality.
Welcome, Abdou Diallo, to Borussia Dortmund!
