The Daily Bee (April 3rd, 2018): A new start

The club is currently not exactly in great shape, embarrassed in both international competitions, an unclear coaching situation, a squad that has several holes and the qualification for the Champions League in serious doubt. Watzke and Zorc need to turn this around quickly, luckily they seem to be working on it as several reports and rumors suggest.

Acording to reports from both kicker and Bild Borussia Dortmund will not extend with Peter Stöger and hire a new coach this summer. Stöger and BVB never seemed to be a great fit, and after the debacle against Bayern even Stöger himself seemed to be disenchanted with the thought of continuing in Dortmund. The only thing that matters right now is a top-4 finish in the Bundesliga.

Bild once again suggests Lucien Favre will be the first choice for Dortmund. The Swiss coach from OGC Nice has a release clause in his contract which allows him to leave the French club this summer.

Last week Hans-Joachim Watzke announced somewhat surprisingly that two new consultants would be hired, Matthias Sammer and Sebastian Kehl. Kehl will be “Head of pro-players” and Sammer will be hired as an external consultant. However new rumors suggest that both positions might be even more influential than initially suggested.

Kehl will work closely with Michael Zorc and it looks like he’ll be groomed as his successor. According to kicker Miachel Zorc will step down after his newly extended contract ends in 2021 and Kehl would be his natural successor at that point. There is no mention if Zorc would take another position at the club.

In addition rumors suggest Sammer will be more involved in the decisions of the club, having a say in transfer decisions and the coaching search. Sammer has proven to be one the best football-minds in Germany so this can only be beneficial for the club.

  • Transfer rumors

Several transfer rumors have popped up over the last couple of days, here’s a small summary:

Nicola Barella: calciomercato claims BVB are interested in Barella, a 21-year-old central midfielder who is currently playing for Cagliari Calcio.

Hirving Lozano: According to calciomercato Lozano from PSV Einhoven could be a target for Dortmund. The young Mexican winger has been a revelation in the Dutch Eredivisie this season scoring 14 goals and adding 10 assists so far.

Houssem Aouar: Several rumors suggest Aouar will be a target for Dortmund this summer. The 19-year old is currently playing for Olympique lyon and is a central midfielder.

Marko Rog: And again calciomercato who claim BVB are looking at Marko Rog from Napoli. He’s also a central midfielder.

Even though those might not be the most reliable sources it is possible BVB are at least scouting those players. Since most of them are central midfielders it could suggest BVB-officials have identified the position as a position of need this summer.
