Peter Stöger’s unbeaten run came crashing to a halt today, as Borussia Dortmund fell to Red Bull Salzburg 2-1. It was an anemic performance from BVB, as they failed to generate any significant chances outside of Andre Schürrle’s goal (which came off of a nice assist from Christian Pulisic.)
Even though Stöger fielded a squad that was pretty close to full strength, they still could not answer Salzburg’s two goals. Throughout the match Salzburg looked as if they had more energy, more fight, and more creativity. If BVB are to advance into the next round in the Europa League, they will need to put up one heck of a fight.
Being down one goal on aggregate is bad enough, but the fact that Salzburg also got two away goals means that BVB will likely need to win by at least two goals, and will need to score at least three if they only win by one. Given the squad’s lack of offensive fireworks over the past weeks, that could be a difficult task to manage.
