The Daily Bee (February 14th, 2018): Will BVB extend with Stöger?

  • Stöger to continue as BVB-coach

According to a Sport Bild-report Borussia Dortmund will look to extend Peter Stöger’s contract and keep him as their coach for next season. Watzke & Co. have reportedly cooled on Julian Nagalesmann, who was seen as the frontrunner for the job so far. Watzke commented on the matter, saying “We have a great mutual trust with Peter Stöger. In due time we’ll have talks and make our decision public.”

Well before everyone panics now this does not really seem like a foregone conclusion and rather like speculation and a nebulous quote to go with it. Watzke’s comment doesn’t really guarantee that Stöger is their choice and we’ll probably have to wait a bit more until the club will make and announce a decision. Stöger has a chance to secure the job but the team will have to improve in the coming months, if that doesn’t happen I don’t see how they can continue with him.

  • Watzke and Treß extend their contracts

Now it’s official, Hans-Joachim Watzke and Thomas Treß have officially extended their contracts until 2022. Watzke will continue to be the managing director of the club and be in charge of the departments “Sport”, “Communication” and “Personnel”. Treß will continue to head the “Finances & Facilities” and “Organisation” departments.

Borussia Dortmund have to pay yet another fine to the DFB because of several incidents involving their fans. Four different incidents - Pyro during the DFB Cup game against Magdeburg, pyro and throwing of objects during the derby against Schalke and pyro in a Bundesliga game against Hertha - added up to a 50.000€ fine.

  • Champions League results

As expected Manchester City had no trouble with FC Basel, winning comfortably 4-0 in Switzerland. Ex-BVB player Ilkay Gündogan scored two goals for City. Meanwhile Juventus gave a 2-0 lead away at home to Tottenham Hotspur. In addition Gonzalo Higuain missed a penalty which could have given them a 3-1 lead.

Today Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool will play at FC Porto while Real Madrid host PSG in what is probably the best tie in the round of 16.

Daily Buzz: Personally I don’t think extending with Stöger is a good idea at this point in time. If the team continues to develop and is successful (CL-spot and a good run in the EL) I could see him staying at the club but right now would be way to early. How do you see it, extend with Stöger, hire Nagelsmann or someone else?
