Watzke: If Stoger Keeps on Winning “We’d Be Dumb Not To Continue With Him.’

After a good start to the second half of the season Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke had a lot of interesting things to say in his interview with Sky Sport. With Peter Stoger not losing a game in his short tenure with BVB, Watzke gave the former Koln manager high praise. Most reports indicate Julain Nagelsmann will be the new BVB manager in the summer, a great signing by all accounts. However Watzke said in his interview with Sky that they “would be dumb not to continue” with Stoger if he can keep up his wining ways. While this is a nice vote of confidence in Stoger, it is not entirely realistic. BVB has had a great start to the new year but only against the two bottom teams in the league. As competition for a top 4 spot remains fierce, Stoger will have to get big results against our main competitors to stay in the race.

Watzke’s comments on Stoger weren't the only interesting notes in the interview. He confirmed that we do not have a buy option for Michy Batshuayi but he remains confident a deal can be worked out for the summer. If not, he is confident Zorc will find an able replacement. Also he indicated he had a deal in place for one of Dortmund big three outgoing transfers in the summer of 2016 when Gundogan, Mkhitaryan and Hummels all left the club, but that the player reneged on the deal. With his promise that BVB would keep at least one of those players he may be explaining why he made that promise...or he may just be covering for his own screw up.

As always Watzke interviews leave us with more questions then answers. What do you think about the CEO’s statements?
