  • Matchday 13

The matchday is not quite over yet because 1.FC Nürnberg will host Bayer Leverkusen in the first Monday game of the season but there were still some very good results for BVB.

Dortmund’s 2:0 win over Freiburg was of course the most important game for BVB but some of their competition lost over the weekend. Borussia Mönchengladbach lost to RB Leipzig which extends BVB’s lead over second place to 7 points. Thanks to the three points and Eintracht Frankfurt’s loss to Wolfsburg, Leipzig has now moved into third place. Bayern Munich are now back in the top 4 after their victory in Bremen.

“I hope it’s nothing serious. We would have a huge problem (if it was)”, that’s how Lucien Favre described Dan-Axel Zagadou’s situation after the game on Saturday. The French centerback had to be subbed of in the first half with an apparent foot injury and is questionable for the Revierderby on Saturday against Schalke.

According to the club Zagadou has a sprain but there is no timetable for his return just yet. As of right now it looks like Favre will have to rely on Abdou Diallo and Ömer Toprak to form the center of the defense because Manuel Akanji is out as well with a pulled muscle.

A new club competition will be introduced in 2021, it will be called Europa League 2 and here are the most important points of the competition:

The new competition (which has the working title of UEL2) will mirror the existing UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League, and feature 32 teams in a group stage.

This also means the original Europa League will be reduced from now 48 members to just 32 clubs.

The format will see eight groups of four teams, followed by the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Similar to the Champions League, the third placed teams in the Europa League will “go down” and play in a knockout round in the Europa League 2. In addition the winner of the competition will have a guaranteed starting spot in the Europa League the following season.

The new third competition will ensure that at least 34 countries will be represented in the group stages of the UEFA club competitions (today, the minimum guaranteed number is 26). All member associations will have access to the three club competitions and all associations will keep the same overall access quota as currently.

For the Bundesliga this means the 7th placed team will be able to play in the competition. However they will have to go through play-offs. The games will be played on Thursdays at 16.30h CET before the Europa League games.
