The Daily Bee (December 11th, 2018): BVB chase Atletico and Liverpool on the brink of elimination

According to Cadena Ser Fernando Calero could be joining Borussia Dortmund in January or next summer. The Spanish centerback has an 11€ million release clause in his contract with Real Valladolid and FC Sevilla, Arsenal London and BVB are said to be the interested clubs.

Borussia Dortmund already have solid depth at centerback with Akanji, Diallo, Zagadou and Toprak, adding another central defender seems unlikely unless someone leaves the club, Toprak being the only real candidate for a move here. If Toprak would put in a transfer request Calero would be an intriguing option especially at just 11€ million.

• Champions League matchday

BVB have already secured their place in the next round but have a chance to finish first if Brugge can hold Atletico to at least a draw. In other groups the situation is a bit more complicated.

In group B Barcelona have clinched first place but the race for second is still on. Currently Tottenham and Inter are tied with 7 points apiece but the Italian club have the clear advantage in the last game when they host PSV and Spurs have to travel to Barcelona.

The situation is even tighter in group C where Liverpool, the runner up of last year’s Champions League could already be eliminated. The Reds host Napoli and need to win their game to have a chance to advance. If PSG win in Belgrade they’re through and Liverpool’s situation would become even more dire, in that case Klopp’s team would need a 1-0 victory or with a 2 goal margin, every other result and they are out.

Group D is already decided, both Porto and Schalke are qualified for the knockout rounds.
