Top of the table Borussia Dortmund secured a 1-0 victory against a rather mediocre Wolfsburg side, leaving the Wolves in 11th place in the Bundesliga. Coming off a draw against Hertha Berlin was rough, but the Black and Yellow army under Lucien Favre put in enough for the three points, which was crucial considering 2nd place Bayern Munich dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Freiburg.
As per usual, Der BVB came out attacking, and looked to be controlling the pace early in the game, creating plenty of chances to shoot or score, but not finishing. There were times when Wolfsburg did the same, but their attacks lacked any real sort of bite, and it seems like their players forget which type of football they are playing, as a few shots went well over the goal.
It was in the 27th minute that the only goal of the match would come. Jadon Sancho had the ball on the left wing of the pitch, and crossed it in toward Thomas Delaney. Delaney headed it across the face of the goal, and it looked like it was going to go out, but Marco Reus was in the right place at the right time, and with no one marking him, headed the ball into the goal. A rather embarrassing goal to concede, as Reus caught all the Wolfsburg defenders sleeping.
The second half had some noteworthy plays, but nothing resulting in a goal. Bürki made a few saves, Thomas Delaney shot the ball wide of the goal, and Bruun Larsen nearly got on the scoreboard. There is a chance we could be seeing more of Ömer Toprak in the future, as he got subbed on at the end, suggesting he is ready to be used by Favre. Nonetheless, the game ended 1-0, and Dortmund still sits on top of the Bundesliga, with 4 points between them and Bayern.
Wasn’t it weird watching a game where Paco didn’t score?
