  • Champions League results

Bayern Munich have secured their spot in the knockout round and Niko Kovac has bought himself some time (for now) with a convincing 5-1 win against Benfica. There other German team, TSG Hoffenheim, lost their home game to Shakthar (2:3) and was eliminated from the competition. Nagelsmann’s team now faces an uphill battle to finish third and at least stay in the Europa League.

In total 7 (Bayern Ajax, Manchester City, Real, AS Roma, Juventus, Manchester United) teams have already qualified for the round of sixteen before the last matchday in groups E-H.

  • 14-year sentence for culprit in BVB-attack (kicker)

A bomb detonated close to the team bus ahead of the Champions League home game against AS Monaco in 2017, injuring two people, Marca Bartra and a police officer. Yesterday the accused Sergej W. has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted murder in 28 cases.

During the investigation it was revealed that the motive was a plot to make money if the BVB-shares would drop after the attack on the passengers of the bus.

In the summer of 2016 Borussia Dortmund went through a lot of changes, Ilkay Gündogan, Mats Hummels and Henrikh Mkhitaryan had left BVB and the club was looking for reinforcements. One of the targets was Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik.

The 31-year-old now revealed during an interview with Sport Bild that he was close to joining the black and yellows.

“I almost ended up at BVB and negotiated with the club, that’s true. But the talks weren’t that easy. I was told that the club had to sell players before they could get me. That lasted until August. At that point, I had already started preparing with Napoli and didn’t want to leave anymore.”

Borussia Dortmund ended up buying André Schürrle, Sebastian Rode, Mario Götze and Ousmane Dembélé. Michael Zorc and Hans-Joachim Watzke have done a good job for Dortmund but it’s rather obvious that this wasn’t one of their brightest moments.
