Reports surfaced earlier today that long-time Borussia Dortmund center back Neven Subotic is in Saint-Étienne, France to undergo a medical examination as part of a move to AS Saint-Étienne. Foot Mercato, a French tabloid, is reporting that Subotic and BVB mutually agreed to part ways, and that the Serb International is set on signing a two and a half year contract with his new French club.
Neven Subotic has been out of the spotlight in Dortmund for some time. While he was a near-permanent fixture during the golden years of Jürgen Klopp’s tenure, he failed to make an impression on Thomas Tuchel, and quickly fell out of the first squad. Neither Peter Bosz nor current manager Peter Stöger seemed to have much interest in playing Subotic, so Neven and the club decided to part ways.
Highlights with Borussia Dortmund
This move has been a long time coming, but that doesn’t make it any less sad to see. Subotic is, and will always be, a club legend. He truly bled black and yellow, and gave us no shortage of highlights to help us remember him.
First, here’s a generic youtube highlights montage set to god-awful dubstep:
Of course, I would be remiss not to bring out “the save”, from the 2013 UCL Final at Wembley. Even though Dortmund eventually lost the match, this is probably one of the most badass moments in BVB history.
Finally, here’s a salute he received from the BVB fans when he returned during his loan spell at Köln last year:
We’ll miss you Neven.
I’m sure he’s heartbroken to leave the club he’s been at for ten years, and there will be many BVB fans who will be sad or angry to see him go, but we as fans should hope that he succeeds in his new surroundings.
