Dortmund youngster Dario Scuderi suffered a horrible injury in a UEFA Youth League game against Legia Warsaw last September. He completely tore up his left knee, and it’s doubtful that he will ever be able to play again.
Career-ending injuries are extremely tough on athletes, who have usually devoted their lives to the sport. But according to Bundesliga.com, BVB will pay so the 19-year-old can further his education by studying sports management.
The injury to Scuderi was especially tragic, as he was apparently close to breaking into Thomas Tuchel’s senior squad at the time. He’d also appeared many times for Italian youth national team sides. He had a very bright future in the sport.
Gestures like this are one of the reasons that Dortmund are so respected throughout Europe.
What happened to Scuderi is awful, but hopefully he can use this education to start plotting a path for his life outside of football.
