We all knew it was coming and now BVB have given the official confirmation of Merino’s loan move to Newcastle United.

Dortmund confirmed that the deal is a one year loan with an obligation to buy if Merino reaches a certain amount of games for Newcastle, however the exact number of games is unknown. The fee of the loan and the clause are not disclosed but according to reports the loan fee comes in at 3€ million while the clause is at 7€ million, so Dortmund could get a maximum of 10€ million total for the Spaniard. It is unknown if Dortmund has secured some sort of buy-back clause.

The 21-year-old central midfielder joined Borussia Dortmund last summer for 3.75€ million from CA Osasuna. Merino never really broke into the rotation for Dortmund, let alone the first team, appearing in only 9 games in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup.

The Spaniard flashed his talent in the few chances he got and a lot of BVB-fans would have certainly liked for him to get another chance. However with the addition of Mahmoud Dahoud the central midfield position got even deeper and the chances of minutes for Merino diminished even more.

Good luck in the Premier League Mikel, let’s hope we’ll see you back in Dortmund sometime.
