The month of May - what is it good for? Well, we all know April showers bring May flowers...school’s out for summer...and, oh right, transfer rumors.
At this point, it has become increasingly clear that Borussia Dortmund is going to, once again, be a big buyer this summer. But who will BVB be dropping the big bucks to get? Well if last summer is any indication, Hans-Joachim Watzke and Michael Zorc will be looking to acquire more youth stars.
If you’ve been keeping up with The Daily Bee, you’ve seen over the past few days that Dortmund is keen on signing youngster Enes Unal and Dan-Axel Zagadou. However, there are a few more youngster Dortmund has been keeping its eye on as the window prepares to fly open. Here are five stars under the age of 21 that Dortmund could net this offseason.
In Friday’s Daily Bee, it was reported that Unal is drawing the interest of around 20 clubs from around the world. His main attraction is a small fee as his parent club Manchester City will likely need to unload him after his post-Brexit work permit was denied. It may be overly optimistic to say Dortmund will win the race to sign Unal, but it’s absolutely likely. Given the large presence of Turkish players in Dortmund already, the fit would be perfect for Unal as players like Nuri Sahin, Emre Mor, and Omer Toprak will be able to help him adjust.
Without continuing to drag this saga out, let’s keep it simple. Dortmund is projected as 76% likely to sign Zagadou, according to TransferMarkt. Take that as you wish, it’s still a decent chance to secure the promising young defender. And if the odds weren’t enough, Zorc confirmed the club’s interest on Friday as well. In an interview with Bild, Zorc stated: "A good player, let's see what's going to happen. We are always looking for professional players and perspective players. Should he decide for us, it would be a prospect player who certainly does not help us immediately." That last remark can be confusing but it only means he will need a year or two on academy squads before joining the big club.
The midfielder at FC Nantes has drawn interest and speculation from around Europe, with his preferred destination looking to be in Germany. Bayern Munich recently had an €8 Million offer refused, but BVB and Bayer Leverkusen remain interested in the 19-year-old. His contract runs to 2020, though, and he likely wouldn’t feature for Dortmund right away. Many reports even suggest him being bought and promptly loaned away by BVB, but interest remains high for Harit.
How about a player not born in the 20th century? This German youth national star is currently in the Hamburger SV Academy levels and is likely to move elsewhere this summer. RB Leipzig and its energy drink money have been hot on his trail, but Dortmund is trying to poach the youth product this summer. As BVB looks to keep its youth teams in peak form every year, a signing like Arp might be one of the most incredible yet for a team that has been arduously preparing for the future. Dortmund seems like a better destination for Arp who could get a shot at the top level early on under coach Thomas Tuchel.
Your eyes do not deceive you! Pep Guardiola has made several players unhappy under his tutelage, with Iheanacho being the latest victim. His agent has noted Kelechi is definitely leaving Man City this summer to continue his development and career elsewhere. That elsewhere could be Dortmund. With increasing likelihood that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang may actually be leaving within the next year, preparation for his departure is well under way. Hoffenheim is also interested in Iheanacho, but the 20-year-old Nigerian will fit seamlessly into the Dortmund attacking system. The proposition for an Iheanacho-Aubameyang swap with Man City is being discussed, but you can expect a hard NO from the Dortmund contingent.
Let us know which of these five you think is most likely to arrive this summer.
