Earlier today, Borussia Dortmund announced that Nuri Sahin has extended his contract with the club until 2019. This comes as a pleasant surprise to many, including myself, who thought that Sahin would be on his way out this summer.
On the subject, Dortmund CEO Hans Joachim-Watzke had this to say:
"We are delighted that Nuri is staying with us. He's a local boy, a really nice lad, and very attached to Borussia Dortmund."
Sahin’s history at the club has been marred by transfers and near constant injuries. He came up through Dortmund’s youth academy, and became the Bundesliga’s youngest ever goal scorer with the club. However, a failed transfer to Real Madrid and more injuries got him sent back to Dortmund. This past weekend he injured himself against Mönchengladbach, and it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to play again this season.
I’m really happy about this. Not only is Sahin a true black and yellow and a class act, but he’s been playing fairly well when healthy. I’m excited to have him back next season, as he will provide valuable depth and capable defense in midfield.
