After years of Bayern Munich pillaging Borussia Dortmund for their best players we finally got one back!
Well...
...kind of...
...not really
Today Borussia Dortmund officially announced the signing of Sebastian Rode from Bayern Munich. As per usual, BVB opted not to disclose the agreed upon transfer fee, however different reports suggest that his price tag is in the range of €13 million, he signed a 4-year contract.
Rode joined Bayern after the 13/14 season from Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer, in his two years with the club the young German never really managed to break into the starting eleven. He got his 52 appearances for the Bavarians mostly as a rotational player of the bench.
The 25-year old is at his best when he can play as a defensive midfielder in front of the backline, even though his build-up play is decent it is not anywhere near the level of this year's shooting star Julian Weigl's, which begs the question if Thomas Tuchel has a system-change in store for us for next season. Another idea behind the transfer could be the fact that the midfield of the black and yellows seems to have very few "fighters". Weigl, who played the position for most of last years campaign is more of a creative player who is comfortable with the ball at his feet rather than being the one who chases the ball handler around, the same could be said of Sahin, Castro or newcomer Merino. The fact of the matter is, a fighter like Rode could help this squad in specific situations, for example let's say the Liverpool-game...I know, I know, too soon.
Whatever coach Tuchel has planned for him, we'll find out fairly soon, so welcome to the club Sebastian Rode.
