Euro 2016: Reus Cut from Germany's Euro Squad

In a surprise announcement today, Marco Reus has been cut from Germany's final 23-man squad for the UEFA European Football Championships. Citing "massive" medical concerns, national team trainer Jögi Löw announced the decision to leave the 27 year-old BVB attacking-midfielder behind during a live DFB-TV press conference. The decision was not an easy one and Löw expressed his personal reasons as such:

We brought in more players in this training camp knowing full well that one or two players were carrying knocks. In the first week of the camp I consciously wanted competition among many positions. We discussed our decision yesterday and the day before yesterday in great detail...Most important was that we once again talked to the medical staff...I know it is a big surprise for the players. But on the other hand, they should also understand it as a chance (to get better) and as motivation for the coming year.

Regarding Reus, whose birthday is also today, the DFB medical team expressed grave concerns that he "could only run in straight lines" and not much else during the the training camps in Ascona, Switzerland.

The news will definitely be a blow on birthday celebrations.
