DFB Pokal Final 2016: Ribery gouges Castro's eye, somehow avoids a red card

Franck Ribery was a naughty boy today.

Today's German Cup final between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich didn't really need another moment of controversy, but we got one anyway.

In the 39th minute there was a coming together between Franck Ribery and Julian Weigl after a few hard tackles. Gonzalo Castro stepped in to defend his teammate and came face to face with Ribery. The image below is pretty damning. Ribery clearly attempts to poke (or gouge) Castro's eye.

It was an obviously dirty play from Ribery, but after the scuffle he managed to get away with only a yellow card. To add insult to injury, Castro was also yellow carded. But the most frustrating thing here is that the sideline official couldn't have been in a better position to see the incident. He is literally right behind Ribery!!! How does he not make that call?

Unless one of these two players receives a second yellow, this eye gouge will not have an impact on the rest of the game, but it really should have. Ribery should have been sent off, and he should certainly be facing a retroactive ban after the game.

At least karma will be on Dortmund's side for the rest of the match. Right?
